AI-powered cameras on Seoul’s Han River bridges have significantly enhanced suicide prevention efforts, alerting responders when someone is in danger. These systems have boosted the rescue success rate to over 99% from a previous 56% in 2012.

The surveillance technology identifies individuals lingering dangerously or using dedicated phones on bridges. Emergency teams can arrive within the critical five-minute window to potentially save a life.

Despite this advanced surveillance technology, South Korea continues to face a severe suicide crisis. President Lee Jae Myung has termed the prevailing suicide statistics as a "disgrace on the world stage."

Social pressures such as relentless academic demands and heavy workloads contribute to high suicide rates among youth. The director of suicide prevention at Seoul’s St. Mary’s hospital noted that victims often feel they are a burden to others.

Globally, AI-enhanced CCTV systems are used to detect potential suicide attempts, providing essential alerts before tragic outcomes. These systems spot unusual behavior but cannot entirely solve underlying mental health issues.

Cartoonist Smiling Stone Hwang, who overcame her own suicide attempt, highlights the importance of societal acceptance in overcoming personal crises. Technological solutions complement but do not replace the need for comprehensive mental health support.
