Link: Wikipedia turns 25 and shares a glimpse into the lives of its volunteer editors
The Wikimedia Foundation is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Wikipedia with a mini docuseries showcasing its diverse editors. This initiative features individuals like "Hurricane Hank" and Netha, an Indian doctor fighting misinformation about COVID-19.
The series also highlights Joanne, who was inspired by Instagram to create a page about Eloise Butler, and Gabe, who focuses on accurately representing historic Black figures.
These personal stories from volunteers worldwide provide a human element to the encyclopedia's broad array of information.
In addition to the docuseries, the foundation has launched a digital "time capsule" featuring an audio clip from Wikipedia's founder, Jimmy Wales, and a recap of significant moments in the site's history.
Despite facing political accusations of bias, Wikipedia remains a vital knowledge resource, attracting over 1.5 billion unique devices monthly.
“Wikipedia demonstrates 25 years of humanity at its best, proving that when people come together in the spirit of building trust and collaboration, they can make the impossible possible,” says Wales. #
