Link: The RAM shortage could last years
Memory makers are projected to satisfy only 60 percent of market demand by the end of 2027. This shortfall is noted despite planned increases in DRAM production.
Industry giants like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are expanding their production capacity. However, these new facilities won't be operational until 2027 or later.
A recent facility by SK in Cheongju marks a modest increase in production capabilities among the three major producers for 2026. Nikkei Asia suggests a 12 percent annual production increase is necessary to meet upcoming demands.
Counterpoint Research, however, reports that only a 7.5 percent increase is expected in the next few years. This discrepancy indicates a looming persistence in supply shortfalls.
Most new production will focus on high-bandwidth memory, crucial for AI data centers, rather than general-purpose DRAM. This focus shifts away from meeting the broader consumer needs in electronics like phones and laptops.
As a result, consumer electronics such as VR headsets and gaming handhelds are experiencing price hikes due to ongoing RAM shortages. This trend is likely to continue affecting prices and availability #
