Link: Spotify just won $322 million from music pirates it can’t find
Spotify and three major record labels have secured a $322 million default judgment against Anna's Archive. The group, known for its piracy activities, failed to respond to the lawsuit initiated for illegally distributing music files.
The lawsuit was a response to Anna's Archive's announcement in December, claiming they had ripped 86 million songs from Spotify to create a "preservation archive." The lawsuit highlighted this activity as the "brazen theft of millions of files" containing world-renowned music.
Judge Jed Rakoff issued the verdict, which includes $300 million in damages for Spotify and $22.2 million collectively for Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music. Additionally, a permanent injunction now requires ISPs to block access to the Anna’s Archive website.
Despite the ruling, enforcing these demands poses challenges as the operators behind Anna’s Archive remain anonymous. The shadow library has already attempted to circumvent legal barriers by relaunching on new domain names.
This legal victory underscores the ongoing battles between streaming platforms and piracy networks over intellectual property rights. However, the effectiveness of such judgments is questionable as the battle continues in the digital realm.
