Link: Etc.books: A lone bookstore in Tokyo pushes against sexism

Editor Akiko Matsuo initiated a protest for the first time in 2018 after discovering Tokyo Medical University's discriminatory practices against women. This event sparked her awareness of the impact of vocal advocacy.

Matsuo's awakening led her to establish Etc.books, a feminist publishing house, in the same year to champion underrepresented voices.

Named to highlight individuals typically relegated to "etc." in society, Etc.books evolved to include a bookstore launched in Tokyo's Shindaita neighborhood in 2021.

Today, the bookstore boasts a diverse collection of 3,000 titles that range from children's literature and cookbooks to philosophical texts.

While the books are mostly in Japanese, the store also features works in English, Korean, and other languages, all united by feminist themes.

Etc.books has not only broadened its literary range but also serves as a vital gathering space for readers and activists committed to equality. #
