Link: A survey of 1,047 US college students on GenAI: 55% use the tech for brainstorming ideas, 18% now question the value of college more than they used to, and more (Colleen Flaherty/Inside Higher Ed)
Inside Higher Ed's Student Voice survey highlighted how students perceive and interact with generative AI in higher education. The second installment focuses on AI's impact on academic integrity, learning, and future career preparation.
The majority of students are utilizing generative AI for coursework, mainly for brainstorming and studying, suggesting a supportive rather than substitutive approach to learning. Surprisingly, only a quarter have used AI to complete assignments, indicating a cautious integration into their academic routine.
Regarding academic integrity, 97% of students advocate for proactive institutional interventions rather than punitive measures, favoring education on ethical AI use over strict restrictions. This reflects a preference for understanding and adapting to AI, rather than resisting its integration.
Students report mixed effects of AI on learning, with many expressing concerns about its impact on critical thinking. Yet, a notable portion sees AI as a beneficial learning aid, depending on the context of use.
The survey also shows that students desire clear, institutional guidance and training on professional and ethical AI use, highlighting the need for educational policies that evolve with technological advancements. Most participants favored incorporating AI discussions into their curriculum, advocating for a balanced and informed approach to future technologies.
Overall, AI is not seen as diminishing the value of higher education; for some, it enhances it. Most students view generative AI as a tool that, when used responsibly, can enrich their educational experience and career readiness.
