Link: Tesla finally kills Autopilot in a bid to boost FSD subscriptions
Tesla has removed the Basic Autopilot feature from new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in North America. This change pushes buyers towards subscribing to Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system at $99-a-month to access Autosteer.
Tesla made this adjustment as part of a broader shift to subscription-only for its FSD system. They announced the transition from selling FSD as a package to offering it via monthly or annual subscriptions last week.
New Tesla vehicles will still come with the Traffic-Aware Cruise Control feature as standard. However, Autosteer will now only be available through the FSD subscription.
The company’s strategy shift coincides with a legal setback in California. A judge ruled that Tesla had misled consumers about its driver assist technologies, leading to a temporary business suspension.
Tesla originally made Basic Autopilot a standard feature in April 2019. It was a strategic move coinciding with Tesla's first 'Autonomy Day.'
During this event, Elon Musk made ambitious promises about Tesla's self-driving capabilities, including the deployment of robotaxis by 2020 — a milestone that was only reached in 2025 with significant limitations. #
