Link: Nintendo Reportedly 'Almost Discouraging' Switch 2 Development as Studios Told to Launch Games on Switch 1 and Rely on Backwards Compatibility Instead

A recent report from Digital Foundry highlights a significant challenge for developers eager to create games for the new Switch 2. Nintendo has been limiting the distribution of Switch 2 development kits, advising developers to instead focus on the Switch 1, utilizing backwards compatibility.

This directive has led to frustration among developers, including major studios, due to the perceived discouragement of Switch 2 development. Some indie developers, however, like those behind a novel campfire simulator game, have received the necessary hardware.

John Linneman of Digital Foundry revealed that many developers are struggling to access these kits. Conversations at Gamescom confirmed the widespread desire to develop for Switch 2, yet many are hindered by the lack of available hardware.

The selection process for receiving these development kits appears opaque, causing confusion and questioning among developers. This inconsistency is particularly puzzling to industry insiders and could be seen as a strategic misstep by Nintendo.

Some indie games that utilize unique features of the Switch 2, such as camera capabilities, have been granted access to these development kits. In contrast, larger AAA studios have found themselves excluded from the early phases of Switch 2 development.

Oliver Mackenzie of Digital Foundry criticized the uneven strategy and hopes for a future resolution, reflecting a desire among third-party developers for equal access to Nintendo's latest technology. There are expectations that upcoming communications from Nintendo might address these disparities. #
