Link: Microsoft handed the government encryption keys for customer data
The FBI acquired keys to unlock encrypted data on laptops involved in a Guam fraud case by presenting a warrant to Microsoft, which complied. Typically, technology companies, including Microsoft, have resisted such government requests for encryption keys.
Historically, major tech firms like Apple, Google, and Facebook have opposed similar actions, notably during the San Bernardino shooting case in 2016. However, in this instance, Microsoft provided the BitLocker recovery keys following a legal directive.
Microsoft spokesperson Charles Chamberlayne explained that although customers can store their encryption keys out of Microsoft's reach, many opt for cloud storage, which allows for key recovery by the company. However, this convenience could also pose a risk for unauthorized access.
Senator Ron Wyden criticized the action as "irresponsible" for companies to turn over users' encryption keys secretly. He emphasized the potential violation of privacy this represents.
Privacy advocates, including the ACLU, express concerns over the dangerous precedent such actions set. They worry about potential abuses not just in the U.S. but also by foreign governments with dubious human rights records.
