Link: Japanese woman sues man for 1.5 million yen for violating her “right to chastity”
It really does pay to know your rights. A recent case in Japan highlighted that there can be legal repercussions for deceiving a partner about marital status.
The Tokyo District Court awarded a woman 1.51 million yen (US$9,700) because the man she dated lied about being married. This was deemed a violation of her "right to chastity," which supports an individual’s right to make informed decisions about consensual sex.
The right to chastity doesn't relate to virginity but to the autonomy in consensual relationships. According to the court, misleading someone to gain consent invalidates that consent.
In this case, the man’s deceit was discovered after he abruptly ended the relationship, leading the woman to hire a private investigator. Her profile’s explicit mention of not wanting to date married men played a crucial role in the court's decision.
While the woman initially sought 7.82 million yen, the final amount reflected the brief relationship and absence of more severe factors like pregnancy. Public response varied, with many surprised by the existence of a right to chastity.
The effects of this verdict are significant; the woman has even started an association to advocate for stricter laws and educate others about the right to chastity. While the financial compensation doesn't undo the emotional damage, it acknowledges the wrongdoing and offers some redress.
