Link: Is the Flipper Zero the next big car theft gadget?
404 Media reports that an underground market allows the Flipper Zero device to unlock various vehicles by cloning key fob signals. This includes cars from major brands like Ford, Audi, Volkswagen, and several others.
The hack involves custom firmware that intercepts radio signals from key fobs, and is sold for a fee. However, 404 Media suggests that this software could become widely available for free if it gets cracked.
Cody Kociemba, a reverse engineer, predicts that by 2026, the "Kia Boys" - a group known for car theft via simple hacks - will evolve into "Flipper Boys" using this technology. This similarity is drawn from past trends where Hyundai and Kia faced theft spikes due to vulnerabilities.
In the UK, similar radio-based car thefts involve devices that mimic GameBoy consoles, showing a growing trend of using compact electronics for vehicular theft. Hyundai and Kia have since offered a security patch for a fee.
Although acquiring the Flipper Zero and its hacking firmware requires resources, its widespread availability might increase theft incidents. Still, it's unclear if the device can do more than just unlock cars.
As technology progresses, so do methods of theft, indicating a potential rise in such crimes unless preventative measures are implemented. #
