Link: I quit all my AI fitness plans, and I feel free
This is Optimizer, a weekly newsletter by Verge senior reviewer Victoria Song, exploring the latest in tech gadgets that promise to enhance your life.
Over a year ago, committed fitness routines had me healthier and happier. Then, life's unpredictabilities threw me off track, leading to a regression in my fitness.
Recently, I tested three AI fitness coaches—Fitbit’s AI coach, Peloton IQ, and Runna—while preparing for a 5K, but ended up ditching them for a simpler approach. Eventually, I ran the race without AI guidance and improved my time significantly.
I've found AI coaching to be less effective than expected, frequently offering generic advice and requiring constant input to stay relevant. Real-world support, like advice from friends or a coach, often proves more valuable and motivating.
In the end, my experience highlights that while AI can offer assistance, it lacks the personal touch critical to truly understanding and pushing our limits. Relying on my own judgment and enjoying the process proved far more rewarding.
