Link: Hidden Door is an AI storytelling game that actually makes sense
Hidden Door, a new narrative gaming platform, focuses on storytelling within the confines of licensed and public domain works, like The Wizard of Oz and Pride and Prejudice. Unlike AI Dungeon 2, which allowed unfettered creativity, Hidden Door implements narrative limits to maintain thematic consistency.
Players create characters and engage with structured scenarios, where their choices are guided by AI, and success or failure is often determined by random dice rolls. This introduces an element of unpredictability akin to traditional tabletop games.
While testing the platform with a Pride and Prejudice vampire twist, the AI narrated a cohesive, albeit controlled, storyline. Unlike more open-ended AIs, Hidden Door prevented unrealistic omnipotence, enhancing the challenge and engagement of the narrative.
However, the limitations sometimes restrict player agency, making choices feel less impactful. In one instance, my attempts to escalate a confrontation were thwarted by repeated "failed" messages, possibly due to unlucky dice rolls.
The platform still has some technical issues, such as slow response times and occasional repetitive text, which can distract from the immersive experience. Yet, the potential for rich, guided storytelling within familiar settings keeps the gameplay intriguing.
The curated approach of Hidden Door might not offer the freewheeling creativity of other AI narrative tools, but it provides a structured environment that could appeal to those who enjoy directed storytelling with a touch of unpredictability in the narrative's outcome. #
