Link: Google swears it isn’t destroying the web with AI search

Google claims its AI-enhanced search functionality does not reduce overall website traffic, countering recent criticisms. Liz Reid, head of Google Search, noted in a blog post that click volume has stayed stable year-over-year.

However, Reid recognizes that while some website categories see increased traffic, others experience declines. This variability follows the integration of features like AI Overviews, which sometimes changes user interaction.

Recent changes to Google Search have notably impacted various major news outlets and independent websites. For instance, notable publications have seen traffic dips significant enough to necessitate layoffs.

Despite these challenges, Reid argues that Google's search engine continues to drive substantial traffic to websites, benefiting those that offer unique and comprehensive content. She suggests that such sites receive more engaged visitors.

Reid admits that not all users click through from AI summaries, but those who do tend to spend more time exploring the content further. She asserts that these deeper engagements are of higher value both for users and publishers.

Google is also advancing its search capabilities, having recently expanded its AI Mode to all users in the US, and is experimenting with an AI-curated results page.
