Link: Google is building a Duolingo rival into the Translate app
Google is introducing AI-powered language learning tools into its Translate app. The new feature, in beta, offers customized language lessons based on users' skill levels and objectives, such as preparing for foreign travel.
The service currently supports English speakers learning Spanish and French, and vice versa, along with Portuguese speakers learning English. By selecting your skill level and goals using the Practice button, you receive tailored lessons.
Google uses its Gemini AI models to produce specific lessons. For instance, if you're an intermediate Spanish learner wanting to communicate with a host family abroad, Translate might focus on teaching you about mealtime conversations.
This feature tracks your progress, aiding language fluency building. According to Google's Matt Sheets, these customized lessons are designed to bolster communication confidence.
Moreover, Google added a live translation feature to the Translate app, facilitating real-time bilingual conversations. This feature supports over 70 languages and is currently available in the US, India, and Mexico.
Unlike the Google Pixel 10's version, this live translation does not mimic the user's voice, although future enhancements are being explored. #
