Link: Former U.S. Champion in the 1500 Meters Receives 3-Year Ban for Doping

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency suspended middle-distance runner Jonah Koech for three years due to abnormal blood values indicative of doping. The abnormalities were detected in Koech’s Athlete Biological Passport, which tracks biomarkers over time.

Koech, who set a meet record at the U.S. Outdoor Championships last summer, has not competed since the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. He previously won the 1500 meters, surprising competitors like 2024 Olympic gold medalist Cole Hocker.

Originally from Kenya, Koech became eligible to represent the U.S. in 2021 after attending UTEP and Texas Tech. He shifted his focus from the 800 meters to the 1500 meters, significantly improving his personal best in 2025.

Due to his suspension starting July 17, 2026, Koech will miss the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and his results from July 30, 2025, will be disqualified. His 2025 national title will be vacated, and prize money forfeited.

Koech accepted his sanction within 20 days of notification, which reduced his potential four-year ban to three years. He tested positive for blood doping, confirmed by expert evaluation and consistent test results.

USADA CEO Travis Tygart highlighted the case as evidence of the effectiveness of monitoring athletes' biological passports to deter and detect doping. This ensures a fair competitive environment in sports. #
