Link: ‘Eyes-off driving’ is coming, and we’re so not ready

Last month, General Motors announced their new "eyes-off" driving technology, called Level 3 automation. This system will allow drivers to disengage both hands and eyes from the road on certain US highways.

GM plans to introduce this technology by 2028, starting with the Cadillac Escalade IQ. From there, it may expand to other GM brands such as Chevy, Buick, and GMC.

Although this technology permits drivers to be less attentive, they must still be prepared to take over if the system prompts them. If not quickly enough, the driver could be held accountable for any mishaps.

The nuances of liability in these systems are tricky and particularly concerning for regulators. Mercedes-Benz, for instance, has stated that it will take responsibility for incidents caused by its Level 3 system when it's active, but the driver is still liable if they fail to intervene when needed.

The advancement towards Level 3 automation reflects a significant step but also introduces new complexities regarding legal responsibility. Such issues are still in the early stages of being understood and legislated.

As these technologies evolve, they pose novel legal challenges in determining responsibility during incidents. Both the automation systems and the drivers will likely face scrutiny as the boundaries of liability are continuously tested. #
