DoorDash is launching a new drone delivery program called DoorDash Air, with FAA approval. The company received a Part 135 air carrier certification, allowing it to deliver small packages via drone.

Unlike its previous collaborations, such as with Alphabet’s Wing, DoorDash will now use its own drones, designed specifically for food delivery. These drones are being developed by DoorDash Labs, which also created the company’s robotic delivery systems.

The drones are not only designed in-house but are also predominantly made using components sourced from the U.S. This aligns with DoorDash’s aim to develop a drone specifically for filling local commerce gaps.

DoorDash recognizes the complexity of drone delivery extends beyond the drones themselves, emphasizing the need for robust ground-level infrastructure. The company plans to build the necessary systems to facilitate efficient drone deployment.

The use of drones is expected to expedite mid-range deliveries, which are often delayed due to courier availability. DoorDash noted that these deliveries can take 25% longer than shorter routes.

Routing these orders to drones will allow human couriers to focus on quicker, shorter deliveries, possibly increasing their efficiency and earnings. DoorDash has not yet disclosed the initial markets for DoorDash Air but will release more details soon. #
