Link: Apple and Amazon are teaming up to challenge Starlink’s smartphone ambitions

Amazon is spending over $11 billion to acquire Globalstar’s satellite network and take over its partnership with Apple. This move involves acquiring spectrum licenses, operations, and assets to enhance Amazon's Leo satellite internet constellation.

As part of the acquisition, Amazon will also inherit Apple's 20% stake in Globalstar. They plan to continue supporting and expanding satellite services, such as SOS for iPhones and Apple Watches.

Globalstar’s network currently includes 25 satellites providing direct-to-device services. This is unlike Starlink's model, which relies on partnerships with mobile carriers for connectivity.

Amazon aims to blend Globalstar's capabilities with carrier partnerships to offer seamless global connectivity. They hope to create a superior satellite service that reaches every corner of the world.

In collaboration with Apple, Amazon will enhance satellite features for iPhones and Apple Watches. This setup will support emergency communications and other connectivity features for newer models of these devices.

The deal, expected to close in 2027 pending regulatory approval, extends Amazon's presence in space-based internet services. This strategic move aims to challenge competitors like SpaceX's Starlink and improve global internet access. #
