Link: A sleek, wearable airbag for cyclists is nearly here

Van Rysel, in collaboration with In&motion, has developed a new airbag-equipped skinsuit for road cyclists, integrating the airbag directly into the suit. This innovative design differs from conventional external airbag systems and aims to enhance safety without sacrificing comfort and performance.

The development responds to a call from the UCI, cycling's governing body, for advanced protective gear to keep up with increasing speeds in professional cycling.

It's being tested by professional riders and is expected to be available to consumers in the next two years.

Comparatively lightweight at 700 grams, the system includes 500 grams for the airbag components.

Remarkably, it deploys rapidly in 60 milliseconds upon detecting an impact, much like the proven MotoGP solutions.

Designed for both aerodynamics and heat dissipation, the skinsuit uses abrasion-resistant materials to minimize road rash and skin injuries.

It specifically protects the upper body areas not covered by traditional helmets, such as the central core, cervical zone, and spinal line.

Jocelyn Bar, Van Rysel's product manager, equated the potential of the airbag to that of helmets decades ago,

emphasizing the need for comprehensive body protection in a sport where serious crashes can happen instantaneously.
